The United States terminates its tariff-free policy for small packages from China

On May 2, the United States officially terminated its tariff-free policy for small packages from China worth no more than $800. This policy has a chain reaction on local consumers and small and medium-sized business owners in the United States, and the prices of some products on some e-commerce platforms have more than doubled. According to reports, in fiscal year 2024 alone, about 1.36 billion packages will enter the United States in this way, most of which come from Chinese cross-border e-commerce platforms. Some media said that this move forced some e-commerce platforms to reorganize their logistics systems, increase product prices, and accelerate the construction of local warehouses in the United States to avoid the direct impact of high tariffs. At the same time, some foreign brands have stopped shipping to the United States, and some small and medium-sized enterprises have even chosen to withdraw from the US market. According to a report released by the American Consumer Research Institute in April, the policy could cause companies and consumers to lose a total of up to $47 billion each year, with low-income groups being the first victims.
